Byzantine Village - Realmese Caves - Nicoletti Dam Lake
Hike and guided tour along the paths of the Byzantine village of Calascibetta.
It is a rock settlement from the late Roman-Byzantine period.
Byzantine occupation, which began in 535, is clearly evidenced in the Xibetan area by the presence of the Byzantine village (550 AD), in the Canalotto district, which features a complex of 30 cave dwellings, some with multiple floors, and two two-story rock churches with niches for placing the urns of the deceased. Since the cult of the dead still followed the Roman ceremonial rite, the deceased were cremated and the ashes collected in vases.
We will then visit the Necropolis of Realmese, considered the second “Pantalica Necropolis” in Sicily. Its peculiarity lies in the 288 cave tombs, opened in the white limestone rock.
In the afternoon, Lake Nicoletti. Geologically, the area is mostly characterized by low clay hills, surrounded by a eucalyptus forest and beautiful landscapes. We will discover the local flora and fauna, with the aim of disseminating the area’s environmental and historical characteristics.
